I Saw
by Tom Montag

a black and white
photograph, the face
in focus, the background

not. The background,
a bleak land rolling
away, disappearing

as horizon
and sky disappear,
as ocean disappears.

Yet I don't now
remember the face.
I remember that which

was behind it,
which is rolling
away behind

all of us, a stark
and tearing darkness
which takes us,

which has taken us,
which will have
taken us again.
